What Is CBD?

Cannabidiol, abbreviated as “CBD,” is one of many cannabinoids that can be found in the cannabis (marijuana) plant. Cannabinoids act on specific receptors within cells in the human body to produce various effects. Unlike the cannabinoid THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD is completely non-psychoactive and will not induce a “high” or any euphoric sensations in one who consumes it.

When you hear of “the medical benefits of marijuana,” generally the effects that have been found to be medicinal come from the CBD. Thus, by extracting CBD from hemp plants, we are able to create medicine that does not get the user high.

What are some of the medical benefits associated with CBD?

Depression and Anxiety
Various studies have reported that CBD can reduce both symptoms of depression and anxiety in users. Although it would be inaccurate to guarantee that CBD usage will “cure” one’s depression, researchers in a 2011 study found that the regulation of the serotoninergic system plays an important role in depression and stress responses in the human brain, and were able to prove that CBD, when ingested, will begin to “play a key role in the regulation of neuronal excitability.”

Studies since this time period, as well as testimonies from those who use CBD, seem to confirm that CBD usage can be tremendously helpful to those battling with depression.

Depression is a complicated condition that likely cannot be reduced to a single causal factor in anyone suffering from it, so at Quality CBD, we encourage our consumers not to expect CBD or anything else to act as a “magic bullet” or absolute cure. However, research indicates that CBD can be a powerful aid in those battling against depression, and this has been the experience of the founders of Quality CBD as well as our customers.

A proposed explanation for CBD’s obvious effects on the anxiety of many sufferers involves the 5-HT1A receptors in the brain. 5-HT1A receptors are a specific subtype of serotonin receptor which has been found to respond to CBD consumption by transmitting more serotonin signals, which is believed to reduce feelings of anxiety and improve mood.

Because of this, CBD may also be helpful with disorders and conditions that are tied to feelings of anxiety, such as:

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Specific Phobias

Social Anxiety

Panic Attacks

Pain and Inflammation
The exact mechanisms by which CBD acts as pain-relief and an anti-inflammatory for its users are complex and not yet fully understood, although new studies are constantly providing new evidence and proposing explanations. For example, a 2016 study (linked below) found that CBD prevents the cells of the body from absorbing anandamide, a compound associated with pain regulation. By essentially acting as an anandamide uptake inhibitor and breakdown inhibitor, CBD can act as fast-acting pain relief for its users.

Many studies have linked regular usage of CBD to decreases in inflammation in the human body, although some of these studies suggest that CBD is more effective when paired with THC or other cannabinoids in this case. This is one reason we offer full-spectrum CBD products rather than CBD isolate (more on this later).

Beyond scientific papers: CBD usage in the United States has been increasing rapidly in the past several years, with consumers widely affirming its pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties.

Epilepsy and Seizures:

CBD is most famously used to treat epileptic seizures. Clinical trials from the past six years have shown that CBD is an effective treatment for many patients with epilepsy, and in some cases has been successfully used to abort ongoing seizures.

In most patients, CBD usage reduces the frequency and intensity in which seizures occur in those suffering from epilepsy.

What Does "Broad-Spectrum" Mean and How is it Different from CBD Isolate?

As mentioned above, CBD and THC are only two of many cannabinoids that can be extracted from the cannabis plant. While we aim to eliminate THC from our extracts entirely, research has shown that consuming CBD along with other cannabinoids is more effective than merely consuming pure CBD isolate. Whether this is because some of the other cannabinoids have powerful medical benefits of their own, the cannabinoids work better medicinally as a group than individually (called the “entourage effect), or some combination of the two is not fully understood, but it is understood that broad-spectrum CBD products provide more benefit to their users than mere CBD isolate.

All products offered by Quality CBD contain broad-spectrum CBD extract without THC!

Research into the positive effects of CBD is still ongoing and new benefits are being discovered all the time.
